Commercial vehicle tyre work is not car work done harder. The wheel nuts are a different size, the casings are a different construction, the levers have to be longer to get any purchase, and a twin rear axle needs a connector that reaches the inner valve at all.

A good deal of our range was built for exactly this and has been filed under general workshop tooling. A 1 inch drive impact wrench supplied with 32 mm and 33 mm sockets is not a car tool; it is a truck, bus, trailer and tractor tool, and it is on this page because that is what it is for.

The wheel comes off with the 1 inch drive impact wrench, whose extended anvil reaches a nut set back in a deep wheel. The 32 mm and 33 mm sockets supplied with it are the two sizes most commonly found on Indian commercial vehicle wheels.

The vehicle is held on a bottle jack of appropriate capacity and then on axle stands before anything goes under it. The tyre is broken off the rim and levered with a flat lever long enough to give real leverage - 18 inch and 24 inch, not the 12 inch that works on a bike.

Casing injuries are repaired cold with a CT radial patch of the right number, or a BP patch on a bias ply casing, buffed, stitched down and checked. Valves are replaced while the tyre is off: PVR-70 is the truck and bus tubeless pattern.

Inflation on a twin axle is done with a twin tyre connector, whose dual brass head reaches both valves, on a steel tube long enough to get past the outer wheel.

Take the lever length from the wheel you actually work on. The 12 inch lever is a motorcycle and small wheel tool; 18 inch and 24 inch are the commercial sizes, and reaching for a short lever on a truck casing is how levers get bent.

Jack capacity is chosen for the axle load, not the vehicle's kerb weight, and the bottle jacks are offered in 3 ton and 5 ton. Jack stands are a 3 ton pair. A jack lifts; stands hold. Nothing should go under a vehicle held only by a jack.

Patch numbers are the part most often got wrong. Radial casings take CT patches with the bead arrows aligned; bias ply casings take BP patches. The patch size guide below sets out how to choose between the numbers.
